Mules vs. Canadian Bi-Dist (2-21-2017)
The Muleshoe Mules faced the two-time defending Texas State Champion, Canadian Wildcats, Tuesday evening, for Bi-District. The game was played in the Amarillo High School Gym.
It did not take the Canadian team long to demonstrate why they were the defending state champions. The Wildcats, Cameron Copley, launched a barrage of 3-pointers that found the hoop and he started numerous fast breaks that opened an early lead on the Mules.
Canadian defeated the Mules 68-40.
Dagen Dunham, Jesse Leal, and Mario Flores scored two points each in the opening period for the Mules. Canadian led the Mules 17-6 after one quarter of play.
The Mules seem to adjust to the speed of the Wildcats in the second period. Dunham put back an offensive rebound two minutes into the second quarter. Almost a minute later he sank a trey from the corner. Beto Diaz scored his first two points from 15 feet, and Jason Florez made a pair of free throws. The Mules trailed 28-15 at the intermission.
Dunham opened the second half with a pair of charity tosses. He scored on an inbound play two minutes into the third period and chipped in two more free throws before the quarter ended. Tre Villa stole a Wildcat pass and then hit from behind the arc.
Canadian outscored the Mules 20-9 in the third quarter to take a 48-24 advantage into the final period.
Javy Perez scored on a dish from Leal to open the final quarter for the Mules. Dunham dropped in a pair of hoops. Florez finished a fast break and sank a 3-pointer. Diaz chipped in a pair of free throws, and Reese Orozco nailed a trey.
Dunham led the Mules with 17 points. Florez finished the game with nine points, and Diaz dropped in six points. Villa and Orozco made a trey apiece for three points each. Leal, Flores, and Perez chipped in two points each.
The Mules will now move on to their chosen spring sports.
