Mules vs. Dimmitt (3-18-2017)
The Mules bats must have been stored in a freezer for most of the spring break. The Mules did not get a hit until the bottom of the sixth inning when JoJo Rejino dropped a Texas leaguer into shallow centerfield.
The Mules had two more hits in the bottom of the seventh with Matt Deleon blasting a ground ball between the first and second base, and Jason Florez sent a ball back up the middle to score Mikey Lozano and Deleon. Lozano had reached on an error to start the Mule’s half of the inning. Florez scored on a passed ball for all three of the Mule’s runs.
The Mules lost to the Dimmitt Bobcats 10-3 Saturday afternoon.
Ethan Villa opened on the mound for the Mules and gave up singles to the first two batters he faced and then a double to the third batter. Blake Parker fielded a fly ball to the infield for the first out.
Villa snagged a groundball back to the mound for the second out. An error allowed Dimmitt to score the third run in the first inning before Reese Orozco scooped up a ground ball at third and made the throw to first for the final out of the first inning.
Dimmitt did not score again until the top of the fourth inning when they rallied for five runs to lead the Mules 8-0.
Jason Florez took the hill with two out in the fourth inning and struck out five batters while giving up four hits and two runs to close out the game.
Dimmitt recorded a total of 13 hits.
The Mules made one double play in the top of the sixth inning. Orozco fielded a ground ball to short, flipped the ball to Rigo Mendoza at second for the force out. Mendoza then fired a strike to Rejino at first to complete the double play.
The Mules traveled to Dimmitt Tuesday to face the Bobcats for the second time to wrap up the non-district portion of their season. The Mules will open their District 2-3A season Saturday when they host the Littlefield Wildcats at noon.
