Mules vs. New Deal (3-7-2017)
The Mules scored four runs in the first inning one in the second to open a five-run lead over the visiting New Deal Lions on a very chilly Tuesday night. But the Lions did not quit and chipped away at the Mule’s lead.
The Mules held on in the top of the seventh inning for a 10-9 win over the Lions.
The Lions scored two runs in the third inning on a pair of errors and a single. A walk and back-to-back base hits scored one run in the top of the fourth inning. New Deal caught up with the Mules in the top of the fifth inning to tie the game at 5-5.
The Mules exploded for five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to jump back in front of the Lions.
There were two outs in the bottom of the fifth when JoJo Rejino drew a walk. Ryan Rodriguez sent a single to left field. A throwing error allowed both runners to advance a base. Ethan Villa sent a ground ball through the hole to score Rejino.
Reese Orozco sent a ground ball to the shortstop. Rodriguez had run in front of the shortstop before the ball arrived and the shortstop missed the ball. Rodriguez and Villa scored on the error and Orozco went to second. Moises Vasquez tripled down the left field line to score Orozco.
Vasquez scored on a base hit up the middle by Mikey Lozano. The Mules led 10-5 after five innings.
New Deal scored one run in the top of the sixth inning.
The Mules hung on in the top of the seventh inning as the Lions pushed four runs across the plate. A ground ball back to Florez on the mound turned into a double play. Florez scooped up the ball and fired a strike to Orozco covering second base. Orozco stepped on the bag and threw to Blake Parker at first base for the final out.
The Mules will host the Dimmitt Bobcats Saturday, March 18, at 12:00 noon and then will travel to Dimmitt Tuesday, March 21 to Dimmitt at 7:00 PM. The Mules will open district at home against the Littlefield Wildcats Saturday, March 25, at 12:00 noon.
