The freshmen Lady Mules battled all comers in the Denver City Mustang Tournament over the weekend. It was the Lady Mules second tournament of the season to bring home hardware.

The Lady Mules lost the championship game Saturday to the Class 4A Levelland Lobos.

“We ended up getting second place out of nine teams,” said Lady Mule coach Sheri Veazy. “I am very proud of my girls.”

The Andrews Lady Mustangs were no match for the offense of the Lady Mules despite taking a 10-8 lead over Muleshoe at the end of the first period. The Lady Mules seemed to have need a quarter to get warmed up and pumped 16 points up on the scoreboard in the next eight minutes to lead 24-14 at the half.

The Lady Mules cooled down at the intermission and Andrews battled back to cut the Lady Mule lead to 33-30 with one quarter left to play. The Lady Mules were more than up to the task and out scored Andrews 13-5 in the final period for a 46-34 win.

Kyndal Miller led the way for the Lady Mules balanced attack with 10 points. Natali Elizalde and Alyssa Wheeler dropped in eight points each and Keely Dunham added six points.

The Lady Mules were not kind to the host Denver City Lady Mustangs. The Lady Mules raced out to a 20-4 first period lead and never looked back. They out scored the Mustangs 14-4 in the second period, 13-3 in the third period and 5-2 in the final frame for a 52-13 win.

Dunham led the Lady Mule charge with 14 points and Wheeler added 10 points.

The Lady Mules got off to a slow start against Levelland and only scored two points in the first period but only trailed 7-2. Scoring heated up in the second quarter with the Lobos out pacing the Lady Mules 16-10 for a 23-12 lead at the half. The third period did not go well for the Lady Mules and fell back three more points.

The Lady Mules cut the Lobo lead by two in the final frame by out scoring Levelland 9-7.

Dunham led the Lady Mules with 13 points.

The Lady Mules traveled to Tulia to play the Lady Hornets Monday evening and will go to Shallowater December 14 before taking the Christmas break. The Lady Mules will return home January 4 to host the Dimmitt Bobbies.
