Lady Mules vs. Abernathy (11-23-15)

The Lady Mules quickly jumped in front of the Lady Lopes of Abernathy Monday in the Lady Mules home opener. Abernathy battled back in the final three minutes of the opening period to take an 8-7 lead at the end of the first eight minutes of play.

The loss of the lead sparked the Lady Mules on both ends of the floor and they exploded with an 16-4 run to take a 23-12 lead by the intermission. The Lady Mules gave up four points of the lead in the third period but out ran the Lopes to the finish line 19-17 in the final period for a 49-40 win.

Emily Precure drained a 3-pointer from the corner to start the second period to give the Lady Mules the lead for good. Sydnie Sudduth drove the floor and was fouled shooting. She made one of her free throws.

Abernathy cut the Lady Mules lead with a pair of free throws to a single point. Sy. Sudduth banked in a 15-foot jump shot off the glass. Conley Niblett drove the lane from the elbow and Sy. Sudduth finished a fast break to extend the Lady Mule lead to 17-10.

Niblett ended the Lady Mule eight point run with a pair of free throws. Abernathy only slightly interrupted the Muleshoe run with a pair of free throws. Sasha Esparza chipped in a free throw and Sadie Sudduth just got off a 3-pointer that swished the net from the corner prior to the buzzer. The Lady Mules led 23-12 at the half.

A 3-pointer by Sa. Sudduth and a trey and free throw by Sy. Sudduth helped the Lady Mules to weather the Lady Lope storm in the third period. Abernathy out scored the Lady Mules 11-7 to cut the Muleshoe lead to 30-23 after three periods of play.

Niblett scored twice to start the final frame. She made back-to-back jump shots from the elbow. Abernathy drained a trey and made a free throw to keep pace. Sa. Sudduth drove the baseline for a basket and Sy. Sudduth made a jumper from the free throw line to put the Lady Mules ahead 38-30.

The Lopes made two sets of free throws to cut the Lady Mule lead to 38-34. Precure dropped in a 3-pointer from the wing to push the Lady Mules lead to seven. A minute later Precure drove the baseline and dished to Regan Reynolds for chip shot.

The Lopes began to foul in desperation and Sy. Sudduth made a pair of charity tosses. The Lopes sank a trey and free throw with time winding down but Sa. Sudduth and Sy. Sudduth answered with a pair of free throws each.

Sa. Sudduth led the Lady Mules in scoring with 16 points that included two treys and six-of-seven free throws. Sy. Sudduth was right behind with 15 points that included one 3-pointer and four-of-six free throws. Niblett finished with nine points, Precure dropped in a pair of treys for six points and Reynolds made two points. Esparza chipped in one point.

The Lady Mules hosted the Hale Center Lady Owls Tuesday night and entered the Shallowater Shootout December 3-5. The Lady Mules return home December 8 to host the Floydada Lady Winds.
