MHS Golf @ Farwell (3-8 & 10)

The Muleshoe High School golf teams competed in Farwell Invitational Golf Tournaments this past week. The Lady Mules took the course on Tuesday and the Mules followed on Thursday.

The Lady Mules finished second out of seven teams. Sadie Sudduth won the individual silver medal to lead the Lady Mules with 95 strokes. Sydnie Sudduth finished with 112 shots, Emily Precure used 116 shots and Leti Loya finished with 142 strokes.

The Mules hit the Farwell Country Club Course on Thursday and Conner Harrison won the individual silver medal. He finished just two strokes over par with 74 strokes. Tony Castillo completed the course with 99 strokes, Cameron Hardwick shot a 131, and Brendon Rodriguez needed 136 shots.

The Lady Mules and Mules will travel to the Amarillo Comanche Trail Golf Course March 22 for their final tournament before starting district competition in Muleshoe and Dimmitt March 28.

The Mule baseball team made back-to-back come backs this past week. Tuesday evening the Mules trailed the Lubbock Roosevelt Eagles 7-4 starting the bottom of the sixth inning. The Mules won the game 11-10 in the bottom of the eighth with a walk-off single by Moises Vasquez.

Saturday the Mules fell behind 10-4 in the top of the fifth inning but battled back to score three runs in the bottom of the seventh on a walk-off single by Rigo Mendoza that scored two runs for a 12-11 win.

The Mules leaped in front of the Eagles 3-1 in the bottom of the third inning. JoJo Rejino walked in the bottom of the first inning and scored for the Mules first run. Jason Florez drew a walk and stole second base in the bottom of the third inning.

Danny Campos also walked to put Mules at first and second base. An Eagle pick-off play went awry and the pitcher threw the ball into centerfield. As the ball rolled all the way to the fence Florez and Campos scored.

The Eagles used four hits, a walk and a Mule error to score four runs in the top of the fourth inning to claim a 5-3 lead.

The Mules cut the Eagle lead to 5-4 in the bottom of the fifth inning Florez singled to centerfield. He went to second on a pitcher throwing error. Florez then stole third base and scored on a bunt single by Campos.

The Eagles added two runs in the top of the sixth inning to lead the Mules 7-4.

The Mules put together a big sixth inning to score five runs. Bryce Mauricio slammed a lead-off single to centerfield. Rejino popped up to the infield and the pitcher muffed the catch to allow both runners to reach base. The short stop was eaten up by a ground ball by Ryan Rodriguez to load the bases with Mules.

Florez walked on four pitches to force home Mauricio. Campos ground ball ran up the short stop’s arm for an error. Rejino scored and the bases were still loaded with Mules. Mendoza’s sacrifice ground ball to the third baseman scored Rodriguez. An error by the second baseman allowed both Florez and Campos to score.

The Mules led 9-7 after six innings.

Roosevelt scored twice in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game. The Mules went in order in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The Eagles pushed one run across in the top of the eighth inning to take a 10-9 lead.

Campos drew a one-out walk and stole second base. Reese Orozco reached on an error by the third baseman. Vasquez single to the right-field fence scored both Campos and Orozco for the win.

The first Roughneck walked. The second hit a fly ball to centerfield that Mauricio chased down and caught. He came up throwing to his cut-off man Florez. Florez turned and fired a strike to Blake Parker at first for a double play.

Jaxon Lee struck out the fourth batter for the final out.

Mauricio tripled to left field and made it to third base standing up. Rejino sacrificed Mauricio home with a ground ball to second base. Rodriguez was hit by a pitch and Florez singled to left field. Campos was hit by a pitch to load the bases with Mules.

Orozco singled to centerfield to scored both Rodriguez and Florez. The Mules led 3-0 after one inning.

Sundown batted around in the top of the second to score five runs. The Roughnecks shutdown the Mules in the bottom of the second inning and scored one run in the top of the third inning.

The Mules could not push a run across in the bottom of the third inning and Sundown scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning to lead the Mules 9-3.

The Mules long climb began in the bottom of the fourth inning. Lee was hit by a pitch but Mauricio hit into a fielder’s choice and Lee was forced out at second base. Mauricio went to second on a wild pitch. Rejino walked. Mauricio scored on a single to center field by Rodriguez. The Mules had cut the margin to 9-4.

Sundown got the run back in the top of the fifth inning to lead the Mules 10-4.

Campos led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a triple and Orozco sacrificed him home with a ground ball to second base.

The Mules shutdown the Roughneck offense in the top of the sixth inning.

Mauricio led off the Mule half of the sixth inning with a single to center and he was followed with a line-drive single to center by Rejino. An error by the right field fielder allowed Rodriguez to reach and loaded the bases.

Campos ripped a ground-ball single up the middle to score both Mauricio and Rejino. Orozco single to left field to score Rodriguez and Campos and cut the Sundown lead to 10-9 after six innings.

A triple and a sacrifice scored one run for the Roughnecks in the top of the seventh inning for an 11-9 Sundown lead.

Mauricio hit a one-out ground ball to right field for a single and he stole second base. Rejino walked and Rodriguez tapped a ground ball to the pitcher. Mauricio was forced out at third base for the second Mule out.

Florez ripped a single to right center to score Rejino. Rodriguez went to third and Florez moved to second on the throw home. Campos was intentionally walked to load the bases and keep the force in effect.

Mendoza blasted a line shot through the hole between short and third base. Rodriguez and Florez scored to win the game.

The Mules played a double header Monday with the Amarillo River Road Wildcats. The Mules will practice through the balance of Spring Break and return to action Tuesday March 22 when they host the Pampa Harvesters.

The Muleshoe High School Tennis team competed in the Levelland SPCHEA Tennis Tournament this past week. Muleshoe had 44 participants that played in a total of 76 matches. There were approximately 380 participants in the tournament. Eleven Muleshoe entries won medals.

Cassidy Cage played in the Class A Girls Singles. She lost to Clovis 4-6, defeated Tulia 8-2 but lost to Clovis 3-8.

The Boys Doubles Class A team of Jesse Leal and Luke Leal defeated Sudan 8-6 and SPCHEA 8-4 to win first place. Jason Florez and Donovan Gutierrez lost to Tulia 0-8, defeated Friona 8-3 but lost to Tulia 4-8. Dominik Hasley and Ean Hasley lost to Floydada 5-8, defeated Olton 8-3 and fell to Tulia 6-8.

The Girls Doubles Class A team of Gloria Gonzalez and Imelda Salcido won second place by defeating Seagraves 8-0 and Plainview Christian 8-7 before losing to Tulia 6-8. Marissa Reyes and Jasmine Garza defeated Plainview Christian 8-4 but lost to Tulia 3-8 and Olton 4-8.

Hallie Myatt and Jacob Kettner won consolation in Mixed Doubles Class A. They lost to Morton 5-8, defeated Slaton 8-2, Muleshoe 8-3 and Plainview Academy 8-6. Denisse Ramirez and Aaryn Ross defeated Slaton 8-3 but lost to Tulia 6-8. The team of Dezzy Gutierrez and Antonio Vasquez lost to SPCHEA 0-8 and Southcrest Christian 6-8. Zoey Apodaca and Kevin Mendoza lost to Tulia 3-8 and Muleshoe 3-8.

Yavet Elizalde won second in Boys Singles Class B by defeating Wellman Union 8-2, but lost to Olton 3-8. Isaac Mendoza won consolation by losing to Seagraves 4-8 but defeated Sundown 8-3 and defeated Sudan (no score available). Raul Sierra defeated Southcrest Christian 8-0 but lost to Clovis 0-7 and Tulia 7-8.

Lili Barrera placed second in Girls Singles Class B by defeating Slaton 10-8, Friona 9-8 and Denver City 5-2. Sophia Sianez defeated Slaton 8-4, lost to Tulia 3-8 and Clovis 3-6. Natalie Diaz lost to Denver City 1-8 and Friona 3-6. Laura Chavez defeated Clovis 8-6, Cotton Center 7-2 but lost to Plains 3-8.

The Boys Class B Doubles team of Evan Paez and Mario Flores won consolation. They lost to Kingdom Prep Academy 2-8, defeated Plains 8-3 and Hale Center 9-7. Javy Perez and Tre Villa also won consolation. They lost to Plains 0-8, defeated Tulia 8-1, Hale Center 8-3 and Plains 8-5. Ethan Gonzalez and Ricardo Torres placed third by defeating Hale Center 8-0, Seagraves 8-4 before losing to Tulia 3-8. They came back to defeat Sundown 8-5.

Anghy Avilez and Xiomara Regalado placed third in Girls Class B Doubles by defeating Tulia 8-3, lost to Denver City 0-8 and defeated Sundown 8-3. Noemi Herrera and Jackie Rayas defeated Olton 8-2 and Cotton Center 8-7 before losing to two SPCHEA teams 3-8 and 3-8.

Rachelle Whitworth and Izaiah Perez won first place in Class B Mixed Doubles by defeating Farwell 8-7, SPCHEA 8-6, Sudan 8-1. Erika Arzola and Jesse Easiley defeated Sudan 8-2, lost to Farwell 3-8 and Abernathy 5-6. Alee Sanchez and Aron Chacon lost to Olton 3-8, defeated Wellman Union 8-2 but lost to SPCHEA 4-8.

The Muleshoe tennis team’s next tournament is March 10 in Levelland.

The eighth grade Mules won their first track meet they entered in 2016. The Mules scored 173.5 points to win the Littlefield Invitational Meet Thursday. Shallowater was second with 119.5 points and Idalou and Levelland tied for third with 110.5 points. Littlefield was fifth with 62 points and Brownfield placed sixth with 43 points.

Eddie Vasquez won the silver medal in the shot put with a throw of thirty-seven feet nine inches. Nathan Rodriguez earned the bronze medal with a throw of 36-11 and Fernando Rivas placed fifth with a throw of 35-11.

Hector Arras won the pole vault with a height of 9-00 and Jesus Montiel earned the silver medal with a height of 9-00. Aaron Venzor took the bronze medal in the high jump with a leap of 5-00. Jose Cardenas placed sixth in the triple jump with a hop, skip and jump of 32-02.5.

Jimmy Villa won the gold medal in the 2400-meter run with a time of eight minutes of 51.96 seconds. The 400-meter relay team of Matthew Alarcon, Damian Juarez, Hector Arras and Jose Cardenas earned the bronze medal in a time of 49.79.

Ricky Diaz ran a gold medal time of 2:21.27 in the 800-meter run and Carter McCamish won the bronze medal in a time of 2:33.00. Kynton Haseloff had a silver medal time of 19.55 in the 110-meter hurdles.

Matthew Alarcon earned the bronze medal in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.67 and Jose Cardenas placed sixth with a time of 13.08. Aaron Venzor, Jacob Barron, Osvaldo Nunez and Cristian Bustillos ran a bronze medal time of 1:47.95 in the 800-meter relay.

Damian Juarez won the silver medal in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:00.16 and Jacob Barron placed fourth with a time of 1:02.25. Jesus Montiel won the gold medal in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 48.77. Kynton Haseloff placed fifth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 53.60.

Osvaldo Nunez had a bronze medal time of 27.02 in the 200-meter dash and Elio Sanchez placed fifth with a time of 27.22.

Ricky Diaz ran a gold medal time of 5:31.96 in the 1600-meter run. Jimmy Villa was close behind him for the silver medal with a time of 5:46.35 and Carter McCamish took the bronze medal with a time of 5:51.66.

The 1600-meter relay team of Damian Juarez, Jesus Montiel, Elio Sanchez and Jacob Barron earned the bronze medal with a time of 4:07.94.

The Mules traveled to Levelland March 8 and will run in Dimmitt March 22.

The eighth grade Lady Mules opened their track season in Littlefield Thursday afternoon and finished third with 113 points. Idalou won the meet with 136 points and Shallowater placed second with 135 points. Brownfield was fourth with 103 points, Levelland finished fifth with 58 points and Littlefield was sixth with 51 points.

Abigail Reyes earned the bronze medal in the shot put with a throw of 29 feet and four inches. Mia Kayla Reyna took fifth in the shot put with a toss of 29-00 and Anahi Sandoval placed sixth with a throw of 28-9.

Kehvia Edwards won the high jump gold medal with a leap of 4-00. Valeria Carreaga, Joceline Ramirez and Kylee Espenson won the silver medal, bronze medal and placed fourth with times of ten minutes 17.33 seconds, 10:37.12 and 11:02.85 respectively.

The Lady Mule 400-meter relay team of Perla Vasquez, Abi Reyes, Aracely Mendoza and Chole Villa finished fifth with a time of 58.30. Didi Esquivel was sixth in the 800-meter run with a time of 3:04.64. Kehvia Edwards finished fifth in the 100-meter run with a time of 20.21.

Lillian Lutz was fourth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 14.71. The Lady Mule 800-meeter relay team of Joceline Ramirez, Aracely Mendoza, Emili Mora and Chloe Villa finished fourth with a time of 2:06.41. Kylee Espenson won the bronze medal with a time of 1:15.10.

Kehvia Edwards won the gold medal in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 57.39. Destiny Vasquez placed sixth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 1:20.40.

Emili Mora won the gold medal in the 200-meter dash with a time of 30.11. Aracely Mendoza earned the bronze medal in the 200-meter dash and Lillian Lutz placed fourth with times of 31.67 and 31.98 respectively.

Valeria Carreaga earned the silver medal in the 1600-meter run with a time of 6:32.97. The Lady Mule 1600-meter relay team of Joceline Ramirez, Kylee Espensen, Emili Mora and Perla Vasquez won the team bronze with a time of 4:54.40.

The Lady Mules traveled to Levelland for the Lobo Invitational Tuesday March 8 and then go to Dimmitt March 22.
