8th Mules vs. Friona (1-18-2016)

The eighth grade Mules jumped out to an early start over the Friona Braves Monday and never looked back. The Mules poured in nine points in the first period and held the Braves scoreless.

The Mules rolled to a 36-22 win over the Braves.

Jimmy Villa hit a 15-foot jump shot to get the Mules rolling in the opening period. Hector Arras then drained a 10-foot jumper from the baseline. Arras picked a Braves pocket and drove the floor for a hoop.

Jose Cardenas passed to Jacob Barron cutting across the lane for a reverse-lay up. Barron was fouled shooting in the final seconds of the first quarter and made one free throw. The Mules led 9-0 after one period.

The Braves scored early in the second period. J. Barron drove the baseline for a basket. Damian Juarez drove the baseline from the other direction seconds later for a hoop. The Braves sank a trey.

Kelan Flores was leading a fast break and was fouled. He made one free throw. Juarez drove the baseline for his second hoop of the quarter. Juarez then passed across the lane to Vasquez for a hoop just before the first half ended with the Mules on top 18-5.

Juarez passed across the lane to Cardenas for a hoop to start the second half. Arras finished a delayed break with a lay up before Friona scored four consecutive hoops. Matthew Alarcon broke the scoring run by the Braves with a short jump shots. J. Barron drove for a hoop near the end of the third period. The Mules led 26-17 after three quarters.

Vasquez put back an offensive rebound to start the fourth period. Juarez answered a Brave hoop with a trey for the wing. Vasquez made a free throw and Cardenas added a put back. J. Barron drove the baseline and dished to Vasquez for the Mules’ final hoop.

The Mules traveled to Tulia Monday night to play the Hornets but return home January 28-30 to help host the Muleshoe Invitational Tournament. The Mules will close out their season at home against the Shallowater Ponies.
