Lady Mules vs. Friona & Tulia (1-19 & 22-2016)

The Lady Mules improved to 2-3 in district competition Friday after defeating both the Friona Squaws and Tulia Lady Hornets. The Squaws made a run at the Lady Mules in the final period but still came up a bit short at 45-42.

The long bus ride to Tulia seemed to agree with the Lady Mules as they jumped out to a 17-6 lead in the first period. The Lady Mules continued to swat the Hornets and defeated Tulia 60-43.

Emily Precure dropped in a 15-foot baseline jumper to open the game against the Friona Squaws. Sadie Sudduth made a skip pass to Sydnie Sudduth for a basket from just inside the arc. Niblett made a free throw and later drove the lane for a hoop. Yvonne Diaz scored in the paint just before time expired. The Lady Mules led 9-8 after one quarter.

The Lady Mules picked up the pace in the second quarter to out score the Squaws 13-7 to lead 22-15 at the half. Niblett got the rally started by scoring in the paint and converting the free throw. She later added two more charity tosses.

Sa. Sudduth also made a pair of free throws before sinking a trey for near the top of the arc. Brittney Mendoza dropped in a 3-pointer from the wing.

The Lady Mules lost no momentum during the intermission and rallied to out score Friona 12-8 in the third quarter. Niblett continued to own the lane and put back an offensive rebound for a hoop. She later went coast-to-coast after grabbing a long defensive rebound.

Sy. Sudduth dropped in a 3-pointer and a minute later Mendoza lined up her second trey of the game. Desi Gutierrez finished the period with a driving lay up.

The Squaws came charging back in the final frame with 19 points. The Lady Mules scored 11 points to hang on for the win. Niblett took a pass from Mendoza for a hoop in the paint. She later added a pair of free throws.

Mendoza hit a 15-foot baseline jumper. Sy. Sudduth nailed a trey and made a pair of free throws in the final 90 seconds of the game.

Niblett led the Lady Mules in scoring with 16 points. Sy. Sudduth finished with 10 points and Mendoza added eight points. Sa. Sudduth dropped in five points and Gutierrez, Precure and Diaz chipped in two points each.

Sa. Sudduth sank a pair of 3-pointers to open the first period against Tulia. Niblett made a left handed lay up and added a second shot from the paint. Precure drove the floor for a lay up. Sy. Sudduth sank a trey and chipped in a pair of free throws to end the first period with the Lady Mules leading the Hornets 17-6.

Sy. Sudduth was set up with a skip pass from her sister Sa. Sudduth for a trey to start the second quarter. Niblett again used her left hand to score in the paint before making three free throws.

Sy. Sudduth added a hoop and four free throws before the half ended. Mendoza lined up a 3-pointer from the baseline and dropped it through the net. Sa. Sudduth made a pair from the line and Yvonne Diaz scored in the paint. The Lady Mules led 37-21 at the half.

The Lady Mules continued to heap on the points after the half time break. Sa. Sudduth made a lay up and Precure but back an offensive rebound for two points. Diaz cruised the lane for a pair of baskets. Niblett continued to utilize her left hand to score in the paint as she made a lay up. The Lady Mules led 48-27 with one quarter left to play.

Only Niblett, Diaz and Marissa Reyes made baskets in the final eight minutes. But Gutierrez made a pair of free throws and Hallie Myatt dropped in three free throws.

Niblett finished with 14 points and Sy. Sudduth was close behind with 13 points. Sa. Sudduth dropped in 10 points and Diaz added eight points. Mendoza and Precure scored four points each. Myatt made three points and Gutierrez chipped in two points.

The Lady Mules start the second loop of district and traveled to Shallowater to play the Fillies Tuesday night and return home Friday night in hopes of evening the score with the Dimmitt Bobbies.
