8th B  Mules vs. MJHS Trny (1-28 & 30-2016)

The eighth grade B-team Mules lost their opening game of the Muleshoe Invitational Tournament to the Olton seventh grade Colts 38-19. But the Mules bounced back to defeat the Morton Braves 28-24. The Mules lost the Consolation game to the Olton eighth grade Colts 47-20.

Ricky Diaz led the Mules with six points in their first game of the tournament. Aron Venzor made five points. Carter McCamish and Matthew Fullen dropped in four points each.

Venzor made a driving lay up to start the game against the Morton Braves. Diaz picked a Braves’ pocket and drove the floor for a lay up. Morton came roaring back with seven points to take a 7-4 lead. Diaz briefly interrupted the run with a free throw. Morton led 11-5 after one quarter.

McCamish hit from the elbow to open the second period. He then picked off a pass and drove the floor for a lay up. Morton scored a basket before McCamish chipped in a free throw. Diaz ripped the ball out of a Braves’ hand and was fouled. He made both charity tosses to cut the Morton lead to 13-12.

The Braves started the third quarter with two free throws. McCamish hit from just beyond the elbow to cut the lead to 15-14. The Braves added a free throw before McCamish was fouled driving to the hoop. He made both free throws to tie the game.

Diaz set McCamish up with a pass and he was fouled while hitting a jump shot from 15 feet. He added the free throw for a 19-16 Mule lead. Diaz tipped a Brave pass and chased it down at mid court. He drove to the hoop to extend the Mules’ lead to 21-16 with one period left to play.

Fullen made a free throw to start the final quarter. Venzor grabbed a long rebound and drove the floor for a hoop. Diaz was fouled attempting to put back and offensive rebound. He made one of his free throw attempts.

McCamish dropped in a 15-foot running jumper. Morton dropped in a 3-pointer to cut the Mule lead to 27-24 with 45 seconds left. Venzor was fouled as the Mules tried to dribble out the time and made one free throw. Time expired before either team could score again.

McCamish led the Mules with 14 points. Diaz made eight points and Venzor dropped in five points. Fullen chipped in one point.

The Mules fell in the Consolation game but it was after the tussle. Diaz led the Mules with nine points and Ozzie Nunez dropped in five points. Venzor had four points and McCamish chipped in two points.

The Mules traveled to Littlefield Monday to play the Wildcats and then go to Friona February 8 to battle the Braves. The Mules will close out their season at home against the Shallowater Ponies February 15.
