Muleshoe High School and Watson Junior High Staff,

We had a great day at choir solo and ensemble contest today in Lubbock.  It was a successful day for both Watson JH and Muleshoe HS choirs.  Please congratulate these students when you see them on Monday.  We took 44 JH students and 37 HS students. 18 HS students qualified for the state competition in May. JV Mules vs. Dimmitt (1-29-2016)

The JV Mules caged the Bobcats of Dimmitt Friday night by a final score of 45-38. The Mules jumped out to a 27-15 first half lead and then cruised in the second half for the 45-38 win.

Kevin Gonzales got the Mules started with a basket 20 seconds into the game. Mikey Lozano second  twice in the first quarter and Kevin Mendoza nailed a 3-pointer. Tre Villa, Coleman Preston and Javy Perez each added a basket to give the Mules a dominant 15-7 lead.

Preston took a pass from Jacob Kettner for the opening the hoop of the second period. Reese Orozco then dropped in a 3-pointer from the top of the key. Javy Perez chipped in a free throw and JoJo Rejino hit a 15-foot jumper. He later chipped in a charity toss. Eric Herrera sank a trey from the wing to give the Mules a 27-15 lead at the half.

Dimmitt came out firing in the third quarter and chipped one point off the Mule lead. Mendoza finished a fast break for the Mules first hoop of the second half. J. Perez scored on a pass from Isaiah Perez and then converted a free throw for an old-fashion three-point play. Orozco sank his second 3-pointer of the game.

The Mules led 35-24 going into the final period. Villa opened the final quarter with a trey from the wing. Kettner also dropped in a 3-pointer. Orozco made two free throws as a result of a pair of technical fouls by the Bobcats. Lozano made a steal and drove the floor for the Mules final hoop of the game.

Orozco led the Mules in scoring with eight points. J. Perez and Lozano finished with six points each. Mendoza and Villa dropped in five points each. Preston added four points. Kettner, Herrera and Rejino scored three points each. Gonzalez chipped in two points for the Mules.

The Mules traveled to Littlefield Tuesday night to play the Wildcats and stay on the road Friday to play the Friona Chieftains for the second time.

The eighth grade Lady Mules had to over come a large deficit Monday evening against the Tulia Lady Hornets. Val Toscano scored the Lady Mules only point in the first quarter against Tulia. The Hornets led 10-1 but the Lady Mules came back to win 22-17.

The Lady Mules lost their opening round game in the Muleshoe Invitational Tournament 38-12 to the Morton Maidens Thursday evening but bounced back Saturday morning to defeat the Olton Fillies 23-12. 

The Lady Mules lost their third place game to the Melrose Lady Buffs by just four points.  

The Lady Mules had cut their deficit to Tulia to 13-12 by the end of the second period. Anahi Sandoval got the come back started with a free throw 10 seconds into the second period. She later dropped in a basket along with a second free throw. 

Toscano went coast-to-coast for a lay up. She later sank a free throw and drained a 3-pointer at the buzzer. Jill Rojas chipped in a free throw as the Lady Mules out scored the Hornets 11-3 to slash the lead. 

Tulia hung on to their lead by out scoring the Lady Mules 3-2 in the third quarter. Emily Mora scored the Lady Mules only basket in the third quarter. 

The Lady Mules took over in the final frame with Valeria Carreaga making two baskets to give the Lady Mules the lead for good. Sandoval and Kehvia Edwards each added a hoop for the win. 

Toscano led the Lady Mules with seven points and Sandoval finished right behind her with six points. Carreaga scored all four of her points in the final period. Mora and Edwards added two points each and Rojas chipped in one point. 

Against the Morton Maidens Thursday afternoon Sandoval scored five points. Mia Reyna dropped in three points and Mora added two points. Edwards and Rojas chipped in a free throw each.

The Lady Mules stampeded the Olton Fillies 23-12 Saturday morning to play in the game for third place. 

Sandoval dropped in a free throw to get the Lady Mules started. Rojas hit a six-foot baseline jumper and the Lady Mules trailed 6-3 after one quarter. 

Rojas hit from 15 feet to cut the Olton lead to 6-5. Joceline Ramirez drove the floor to answer a pair of free throws by the Fillies. Olton made a basket with 30 seconds left in the half to lead the Lady Mules 10-7.

Mia Reyna scored in the paint in the third period to cut the Fillies’ lead to 10-9. Rojas scored on a in bound play to give the Lady Mules the lead for good. Toscano sank a buzzer-beater trey that seemed to take the fight out of the Fillies. 

The Lady Mules led 14-10 to start the final period. 

Rojas took a pass from Edwards and scored in the paint. Sandoval was fouled and made one of her free throws. Reyna sank a six-foot jumper inside the free throw line. Ramirez dropped in and 18-foot basket and Reyna sank a baseline jumper to end the game. 

Rojas led the Lady Mules with eight points and Reyna made all six of her points in the second half. Ramirez added four points and Toscano hit a 3-pointer. Sandoval chipped in two points. 

The Lady Mules lost their third place game to the Melrose Lady Buffs by just four points but stats were not available at press time. The game conflicted with the Mules championship game. 

The Lady Mules hosted the Littlefield Lady Cats Monday evening. They will close out their season February 8 when they host the Friona Maidens.

The seventh grade Lady Mules rolled over the Tulia Hornets 38-24 Monday afternoon. Anahi Barrera exploded for eight points in opening period to power the Lady Mules to the win.

The Lady Mules had a good weekend by winning consolation in the Muleshoe Invitational Eighth Grade Tournament. They defeated the Olton Fillies 31-11 for the
Consolation trophy. Kristian Arzola provided the Lady Mules punch against the Fillies. 

Barrera started the rout of the Hornets by sticking back a missed shot early in the opening period She added three more hoops before the first six minutes ended. Arzola made a pair of hoops and Tatum Hasley made one basket. The Lady Mules led 14-2 at the end of the first period.

The Lady Mules were consistent in scoring eight points in each of the final three periods. Hasley opened the second period by cleaning up the backside with an offensive rebound and put the ball back in the hoop. Daniella Moran took a pass from Barrera for a basket.

Barrera scored on an in bound play and chipped in a pair of free throws. The Lady Mules led the Hornets 22-10 at the half.

Barrera opened the third period with a hoop and dropped in a second basket. Anzley Rodriguez finished a fast break and Arzola chipped in a hoop to give the Lady Mules a 30-16 lead going into the final quarter.

Barrera made six of the final eight Lady Mules points in the last quarter. Moran scored the final hoop before the Lady Mules dribbled out the final seconds of the game.

Barrera led the Lady Mule charge with 22 points. Arzola dropped in six points. Hasley and Moran finished with four points each and Rodriguez chipped in two points.

Barrera got the Lady Mules off to a fast start with two hoops and a pair of free throws in the first period against the Olton Fillies. Arzola dropped in a pair of baskets. Grace Leal finished a fast break and Kaitlyn Kelly chipped in a free throw. The Lady Mules led 13-4 after the first quarter.

Rodriguez, Barrera and Arzola each scored a hoop in the second period and Moran chipped in a charity toss. The Lady Mules had extended their advantage to 20-6 by the intermission.

Arzola took over the game in the second half with five points in the third period and four points in the final six minute period. Hasley chipped in a basket in the third period. The Lady Mules led 27-9 after three quarters.

Arzola set the scoring pace with 15 points and Barrera dropped in eight points. Rodriguez, Leal and Hasley added two points each. Moran and Kelley chipped in a point apiece.

The Lady Mules hosted the Littlefield Lady Cats Monday and will close out their basketball season at home February 8 when they will host the Friona Maidens.

Danny Campos delivered 10 points in both the first and third periods as the Mules buried the Friona Chieftains 74-55 Tuesday night in Muleshoe. The Chiefs put up a battle in the first two periods and just trailed the Mules 34-33 at the half. The Mules exploded for 23 points in the third period and dug a hole the Chiefs could not escape.

Beto Diaz played the garbage man in Tulia Friday night as the Mules swatted the Hornets. Diaz provided the inside punch in the final three periods as the Mules crammed 18 points through the hoop in each of those quarters. The Mules defeated the Hornets 65-35.

The two district wins leaves the Mules on top of the district race with a perfect record of 3-0.

Tony Castillo cranked the Mule offense with a baseline drive early in the first period. He then fed Campos the ball on the blocks for an easy hoop. Campos scored four more hoops before the first quarter ended. Dagen Dunham and Donavan Gutierrez each chipped in a basket. The Mules trailed 18-17 after one quarter.

The Mules took a 34-33 lead by the end of the second period. Dunham drained a trey to get the Mules started. Jesse Leal dropped in a 3-pointer from the top of the key and Jason Florez scored from the elbow.

Tony Vasquez drove and battled through a foul to score. He could not convert the three-point play. Dunham added a pair of hoops and Campos put back an offensive rebound and made both ends of a one-and-bonus set of free throws.

The Mules were on fire in the third period. Vasquez set the pace by picking a Chiefs pocket and driving the floor for a lay up. Campos cleaned up the backside with a put back. He then completed a three-point play by converting a free throw. Campos added two more hoops and one free throw.

Vasquez made a put back and drove the floor for a basket. Flores dropped in a trey from the top of the key and Castillo hit a short jumper. Diaz added a pair of free throws. The Mules had out scored the Chiefs 23-8 for a 57-41 lead.

The hung on in the final frame as the Chiefs made a run at them. The Mules converted six of 10 free throws. Dunham made a lay up to start the final period. He added two more baskets before the period ended.

Diaz made two free throws as did Vasquez and Campos. Flores hit from the elbow and Aaryn Ross sank a trey in the final seconds of the game.

Campos led all scorers with 26 points. Dunham finished with 15 points and Vasquez dropped in 10 points. Flores made seven points, Castillo had five points and Diaz scored four points. Ross made three points and Leal and Gutierrez chipped in two points each.

Vasquez drove the lane and laid up the ball with his left hand for the Mules first hoop against Tulia. Flores pulled up a popped the net from 12 feet. Dunham put back an offensive rebound and Campos found his way to the hoop through a crowd. Dunham stepped outside the arc and sank a trey with just seconds remaining in the first period to give the Mules an 11-8 lead after one quarter.

Vasquez scored on a pass from Dunham to begin the second quarter. Diaz went to work in or near the paint. Flores feed Diaz for his first basket. He then converted a three-point play before putting back an offensive rebound.

Castillo went coast-to-coast for a lay up and hit a short baseline jumper. Flores weaved through the defense for a lay up. He also made a pair of free throws. Vasquez added a free throw. The Mules led 29-19 at the intermission.

Dunham scored the Mules’ first basket of the second half the his final hoop of the game. Campos scored on a feed from Leal. Diaz was on fire with a pair of old-fashion three-point plays that sandwiched a lay up and a put back for 10 points.

Ross scored on a feed from Campos and then picked off a pass and drove the floor for a hoop. The third quarter was the second 18 point period for the Mules and they had held Tulia to only four points for a 47-23 Mule lead with one quarter left to play.

The Mules repeated their 18 point period in the final period while holding Tulia to 12 points.

Diaz rang up 21 points to lead all scorers. Flores finished with 11 points. Vasquez, Dunham and Campos scored seven points each. Ross had six points and Castillo made four points and Gutierrez chipped in two points.

The Mules have back-to-back tough district games this week. The Mules traveled to Shallowater Tuesday night for a battle of the undefeated. Both teams were 3-0 entering the game. The Mules return home Friday night to wrap up the first round of district against the Dimmitt Bobcats.

The Lady Mules improved to 2-3 in district competition Friday after defeating both the Friona Squaws and Tulia Lady Hornets. The Squaws made a run at the Lady Mules in the final period but still came up a bit short at 45-42.

The long bus ride to Tulia seemed to agree with the Lady Mules as they jumped out to a 17-6 lead in the first period. The Lady Mules continued to swat the Hornets and defeated Tulia 60-43.

Emily Precure dropped in a 15-foot baseline jumper to open the game against the Friona Squaws. Sadie Sudduth made a skip pass to Sydnie Sudduth for a basket from just inside the arc. Niblett made a free throw and later drove the lane for a hoop. Yvonne Diaz scored in the paint just before time expired. The Lady Mules led 9-8 after one quarter.

The Lady Mules picked up the pace in the second quarter to out score the Squaws 13-7 to lead 22-15 at the half. Niblett got the rally started by scoring in the paint and converting the free throw. She later added two more charity tosses.

Sa. Sudduth also made a pair of free throws before sinking a trey for near the top of the arc. Brittney Mendoza dropped in a 3-pointer from the wing.

The Lady Mules lost no momentum during the intermission and rallied to out score Friona 12-8 in the third quarter. Niblett continued to own the lane and put back an offensive rebound for a hoop. She later went coast-to-coast after grabbing a long defensive rebound.

Sy. Sudduth dropped in a 3-pointer and a minute later Mendoza lined up her second trey of the game. Desi Gutierrez finished the period with a driving lay up.

The Squaws came charging back in the final frame with 19 points. The Lady Mules scored 11 points to hang on for the win. Niblett took a pass from Mendoza for a hoop in the paint. She later added a pair of free throws.

Mendoza hit a 15-foot baseline jumper. Sy. Sudduth nailed a trey and made a pair of free throws in the final 90 seconds of the game.

Niblett led the Lady Mules in scoring with 16 points. Sy. Sudduth finished with 10 points and Mendoza added eight points. Sa. Sudduth dropped in five points and Gutierrez, Precure and Diaz chipped in two points each.

Sa. Sudduth sank a pair of 3-pointers to open the first period against Tulia. Niblett made a left handed lay up and added a second shot from the paint. Precure drove the floor for a lay up. Sy. Sudduth sank a trey and chipped in a pair of free throws to end the first period with the Lady Mules leading the Hornets 17-6.

Sy. Sudduth was set up with a skip pass from her sister Sa. Sudduth for a trey to start the second quarter. Niblett again used her left hand to score in the paint before making three free throws.

Sy. Sudduth added a hoop and four free throws before the half ended. Mendoza lined up a 3-pointer from the baseline and dropped it through the net. Sa. Sudduth made a pair from the line and Yvonne Diaz scored in the paint. The Lady Mules led 37-21 at the half.

The Lady Mules continued to heap on the points after the half time break. Sa. Sudduth made a lay up and Precure but back an offensive rebound for two points. Diaz cruised the lane for a pair of baskets. Niblett continued to utilize her left hand to score in the paint as she made a lay up. The Lady Mules led 48-27 with one quarter left to play.

Only Niblett, Diaz and Marissa Reyes made baskets in the final eight minutes. But Gutierrez made a pair of free throws and Hallie Myatt dropped in three free throws.

Niblett finished with 14 points and Sy. Sudduth was close behind with 13 points. Sa. Sudduth dropped in 10 points and Diaz added eight points. Mendoza and Precure scored four points each. Myatt made three points and Gutierrez chipped in two points.

The Lady Mules start the second loop of district and traveled to Shallowater to play the Fillies Tuesday night and return home Friday night in hopes of evening the score with the Dimmitt Bobbies.
