9th Mules vs. Idalou (1-16-2017)

The freshmen Mules held on for a 48-47 win in overtime over the visiting Idalou Wildcats Monday evening. The Mules led 25-15 at the half and held on while Idalou rallied in the second half. 

Derek Barron got the Mules rolling with a trey to open the game. Jose Cardenas gave the Mules a 5-0 lead. Mathew Alarcon sank a trey, and Jimmy Villa finished the first quarter with a last second shot. The Mules led 10-6. 

Eddie Vasquez sank a trey to open the second period. Alarcon had chipped in a free throw before Cristian Bustillos made his first of two hoops in the quarter in the paint. Aaron Venzor took an assist from Barron and converted it to points. 

Barron chipped in a free throw to extend the Mule lead to 18-11. Elio Sanchez put back an offensive rebound, and Kelan Florez sank a short jumper to end the first half with the Mules leading 25-15. 

D. Barron went on a three-hoop rampage in the third period. Sanchez chipped in a free throw, and Ricky Diaz put back a rebound for a Mule basket. The Mules led 34-30 with one period left to play.

Jacob Barron nailed a trey to open the final period. Venzor scored a hoop as did Sanchez. Idalou took a 42-41 lead as time was running down Bustillos was fouled attempting to score in the lane. He missed the first free throw but dropped in the second to tie the game at 42-42. 

J. Barron made a pair of hoops in the extra time, and Florez hit a bucket. The Mules won the day 48-47. 

The Mules hosted Dimmitt January 23 and traveled to Slaton January 30.
