Lady Mules vs. Slaton & Friona (1-3 & 6-2017)

The Lady Mules started the New Year with a pair of district wins this past week to improve their season record to 10-7 and improved to 4-1 in District 2-3A. The Lady Mules are in a four-way tie for first place in the district. Both the Slaton Tigerettes and Friona Squaws fell victim to the Lady Mules. 

The Lady Mules started slow but steady against Slaton with nine points in each of the first two periods, but a tenacious defense held the Tigerettes to six points in each of the first two periods. 

Slaton outscored the Lady Mules 15-10 in the third period to cut the Lady Mule lead to 28-27 going into the final eight minutes of the game. The Lady Mules rolled over the Tigerettes 12-8 in the last quarter for a 40-35 win.

The Friona Squaws did not fare as well Friday night with the Lady Mules pumping in 15 points in each of the first two-quarters to lead the Squaws 30-14 by the intermission. The Lady Mules held on for a 52-38 win. 

Emily Precure sank a 3-pointer 44 seconds into the game in Slaton. Sadie Sudduth, Sydnie Sudduth, and Reagan Reynolds each added a basket as the Lady Mules opened a 9-6 first-period lead. 

Sa. Sudduth opened the second quarter with a trey and later sank a second hoop. Precure and Yvonne Diaz also added a basket each as the Lady Mules opened an 18-12 lead at the half. 

The Tigerettes warmed up in the third period and outscored the Lady Mules 15-10. Sa. Sudduth made two baskets and a pair of free throws in the third quarter. Reynolds and Keely Dunham made a hoop each. The Lady Mules led 28-27 entering the final quarter. 

The Lady Mule defense put the Slaton Fire out in the final quarter and held the Tigerettes to eight points. Precure sank the first Lady Mule basket. Diaz completed an old fashion three-point play and then added a second basket. Sa. Sudduth made a hoop and a pair of free throws. Sy. Sudduth chipped in a final free throw. 

Sa. Sudduth led the Lady Mules with a game-high 17 points, made two assists, grabbed two rebounds, and made three steals. Diaz finished with seven points, blocked two shots, pulled down seven rebounds and made one steal. 

Precure also finished with seven points, two assists, and six rebounds. Reynolds made four points, one assist, and seven rebounds. Sy. Sudduth added three points, blocked one shot, and grabbed two rebounds. Dunham chipped in two points and three rebounds. 

The Lady Mules went for a quick knockout of the Friona Squaws. Sa. Sudduth lined up a trey 25 seconds into the contest and let it fly for the first points of the game. Sy. Sudduth dropped in a pair of 3-pointers and Precure made one trey. Sa. Sudduth added one basket and a free throw before the period ended. 

The Lady Mules led 15-7 after one-quarter. 

The Lady Mules repeated the feat in the second period and again poured in 15 points while holding Friona to seven points. Sy. Sudduth made a pair of free throws to get the Lady Mules started. 

Sa. Sudduth made a pair of hoops, two free throws and nailed a 3-pointer. Reynolds and Diaz made a basket each. The Lady Mules led 30-14 at the intermission. 

Precure made her second trey of the game 17 seconds into the second half. Sa. Sudduth added back-to-back hoops, and Dunham chipped in a free throw. The Lady Mules led 38-23 with eight minutes left in the game. 

The Lady Mules were 10-of-12 from the charity line in the final quarter. Sa. Sudduth made a basket and then was five-of-six from the free throw line. Sy Sudduth scored a hoop. Precure was a perfect four-of-four from the line and Dunham chipped in one free throw. 

Sa. Sudduth scored a game-high 26 points, made one assist, grabbed three rebounds, and made six steals. Sy. Sudduth finished with 10 points, five rebounds, and made one steal. Precure also finished with 10 points and eight rebounds.

Reynolds made two points, hauled down four rebounds, and made two steals. Diaz had two points, three rebounds, and one steal. Dunham scored two points, blocked one shot, and grabbed three rebounds. 

The Lady Mules traveled to Shallowater Tuesday to battle the Fillies and return home Friday to play the Lubbock Roosevelt Lady Eagles.
