MHS Tennis @ District Meet (4-3-14)

The Muleshoe High School tennis team competed in the District 2-2A Tennis Meet Thursday in Plainview. The tennis district is compose of teams from Abernathy, Dimmitt, Friona, Littlefield, Olton, Tulia and Muleshoe.

The Boy’s Doubles team of Matthew Barron and Nacho Elizalde won the silver medal to qualify for the Region I Tennis Meet. Barron and Elizalde defeated Olton 6-0, 6-0 and Tulia 6-4, 6-0. They lost to a second Tulia team 4-6. 

Felipe Guerrero won the gold medal in the JV Boy’s Singles by defeating Littlefield 8-0, Abernathy 5-2, Tulia 8-2 and Tulia 8-0. The JV Mixed Doubles team of Dominik Hasley and Marilyn Melendez defeated Friona 8-1.

Marissa Reyes and Jasmine Garza teamed up in the JV Girl’s Doubles to win the silver medal. They defeated Abernathy 8-1, Tulia 9-7 before losing to Friona 6-8. 

The brothers Varsity Boy’s Doubles team of Eli Leal and Jesse Leal placed fourth. They defeated Olton 6-2, 6-1 but lost to Tulia 1-6, 0-6 and Tulia 2-6. Aaryn Ross and Denisse Ramirez placed fourth in the Varsity Mixed Doubles. They defeated Olton 6-3, 6-4 but lost to Tulia 0-6, 1-6 and Tulia 1-6, 1-6.  

Issac Acosta finished fourth in the JV Boy’s Singles by defeating Littlefield 8-0, Abernathy 8-6 but lost to Tulia 5-8 and Tulia 7-9. 

Others playing in the tournament were Kayla Preston. She lost to Olton 0-6, 4-6 in the Girl’s Varsity Singles. Also playing Varsity Girl’s Singles was Bailey Bales and she lost to Tulia 1-6, 0-6.  

Zoe Apodaca and Dezzy Gutierrez competed in the Girl‘s Varsity Doubles and defeated Dimmitt 6-0, 6-2 before losing to Olton 0-6, 3-6. Imelda Salcido and Ruby Regalado also played in the Varsity Girl’s Doubles and lost to Friona 2-6, 7-6 (won the tie breaker 7-2) but lost the third match 2-6. 

In the Varsity Boy’s Singles Kevin Mendoza lost to Olton 2-6, 6-4, 6-7 (lost the tie breaker 5-7). Karen Regalado lost to Tulia in the JV Girl’s Singles

2-8. The JV Girl’s Doubles team of Gloria Gonzalez and Alee Sanchez lost to defeated Friona 8-2 but lost to Olton 5-8. 

Three JV Boy’s Doubles Teams competed in the tournament. Noah Del Toro and Jose Martinez lost to Tulia 4-8, Tre Villa and J.J. Gandara also lost to Tulia 6-8. The team of Antonio Vasquez and Jose Mendoza also fell to Tulia 5-8.  

“Two members of the team that did not get to compete because of injuries were Braden Bessire and Edyy Elizalde,” said Muleshoe tennis coach Jody Wood. “I would like to say a special thanks to Coach Wes Wood, Coach David Wood, Coach Jalissa King, John Gibson, Nathan Young, Tyler Wood and Caleb Wood for all of their help with Muleshoe High School Tennis.”

Barron and Elizalde will play April 16 and 17 on the Ector County Independent School District tennis Courts at Ratliff Stadium. The duo competed in the 2013 Regional Meet as singles players.
