7th Mules vs. Friona

The seventh grade Mules
defied the odds Monday evening and defeated the Friona Braves for the third
time in a single season. The Mules won the first meeting 47-16, the second
meeting 48-12 and 37-20 in the teams third meeting.
Matthew Alarcon scored first
with a drive to tie the game early in the first period. Derek Barron grabbed a
defensive rebound, drove to near mid court and then fed Damian Juarez racing
ahead for the fast break lay up.
Jacob Barron anticipated D.
Barron breaking open in the paint and made the pass for an easy hoop. Kelan
Florez took a pass from J. Barron and scored from near the elbow to put the
Mules ahead. Hector Arras scored on an inbound play and Jose Cardenas finished
the period with a free throw. The Mules led 11-7 after one quarter.
Florez chipped in a free
throw to start the second quarter. D. Barron drove from the right wing for a
lay up. J. Barron was the garbage man just prior to the half and put back two
offensive rebound for points. The Mules had extended their lead to 18-9 at the
break.
Eddie Vasquez open the third
period with a 3-pointer from the left wing. D. Barron drove from the left wing
and pushed up a floater that found the net on the way down. The Mules only
allowed Friona four points in the third quarter and the Mules led 25-11 with
one period left to play.
The Braves scored the first
five points of the final period of the game but Vasquez answered with a pair of
hoops for the Mules. Friona hit two more shots and then went quite for the
final three minutes of the game.
D. Barron took the ball from
a Brave and passed to Cristian Bustillos running to the hoop. Bustillos was
fouled shooting and made one free throw. Juarez sank an eight-foot baseline
jump shot. Alarcon drove the floor, stopped, waited for the defense to fly by
and the battled through a foul for the final basket of the game. He chipped in
the charity toss.
Vasquez set the scoring pace
for the Mules with 11 points and Juarez finished with six points. D. Barron and
J. Barron scored four points each. Florez and Alarcon dropped in three points
apiece. Arras added two points and Bustillos chipped in one point.
The Mules traveled to
Shallowater Monday for the final game of the season.
