JV Mules vs. Friona

Jesse Leal helped fuel a 9-2
JV Mule scoring run in the opening quarter at Friona Tuesday night. Leal opened
the game with a driving lay up. Later he added a free throw and a second hoop
for five points. The Mules held off Friona in the final period for a 40-37 win.
Leal drove on a fast break
and dished the ball to Triston Boehning for a basket. Boehning put back an
offensive rebound to end the first period with the Mules leading 9-2.
Donavan Gutierrez scored
first for the Mules in the second period. Boehning and Leal added a hoop each.
The first half ended with the Mules leading 15-9.
Gutierrez scored to start the
third period. Aaryn Ross took a pass from Leal and turned it into points from
the elbow. Tim Perez and Dominik Hasley each hit a basket. Boo Flores struggled
from the free throw line and made one-of-five from the charity line. But Flores
made two baskets to help the Mules out score Friona 13-9.
The Mules led 28-18 to start
the final period. Free throw shooting plagued the Mules and the Chiefs tried to
take advantage by putting the Mules on the line. The Mules made six-of-13 from
the charity stripe in the last quarter.
Gutierrez made two free
throws to start the final eight minutes. Perez also hit two from the charity
line. Boehning made three baskets from the blocks as the Mules held off Friona
for the win.
Boehning led the Mules with
14 points. Leal finished with seven points and Gutierrez made six. Flores
dropped in five points and Perez added four. Ross and Hasley chipped in two
points each.
The Mules hosted Shallowater
Tuesday night and will travel to Dimmitt Friday to tangle with the Bobcats.
