Lady Mules vs. Friona and
Tulia (1-20&23-2015)
The Lady Mules improved to
2-3 in district this past week by defeating the Friona Squaws and Tulia
Hornets. The Squaws struggled to score against the Lady Mule defense in the
first three periods.
The Lady Mules held the
Squaws scoreless in the first period and led 12-0 and continued to add to the
lead in the second half. The Lady Mules defeated Friona 43-24.
Tulia did not fair any better
and the Lady Mules led 11-1 after the first period. The Lady Mules turned up
the heat in the second period and poured in 19 points while allowing the
Hornets five. The Lady Mules cruised to a 55-24 win.
Dani Diaz did most of the
damage for the Lady Mules at Friona. She made two baskets and finished the
period with a 3-pointer for seven points. Conley Niblett scored in the paint to
start the game and Angie Perez nailed a trey. The Lady Mules led the Squaws
12-0 after one quarter.
Both teams scored six points
each in the second period. Sydnie Sudduth opened the quarter with a baseline
jumper. Sasha Esparza made both free throws after being fouled in the act of
shooting. Niblett ended the period with a shot in the paint. The Lady Mules led
18-6 at the half.
D. Diaz made a pair from the
charity line to open the second half and then dropped in a 3-pointer from the
wing. Yvonne Diaz scored twice in the vicinity of the blocks and Sy. Sudduth
made a trey. The Lady Mules led 30-12 with one period left to play.
Shanice Rosas made a free
throw to start the final period after being fouled while shooting. Niblett made
a pair of free throws and then scored in the paint with a reverse lay up.
Y. Diaz scored in the paint
and made a charity toss later in the period. Esparza scored near the hoop.
Sadie Sudduth battled her way through a foul to finish a fast break and then
cashed in the free throw for a three-point play.
D. Diaz paced the Lady Mules
with 12 points that included two treys. Niblett finished with eight points and
Y. Diaz added seven points. Sy. Sudduth dropped in five points and Esparza
scored four points. Sa. Sudduth and Perez scored three points each. Rosas
chipped in one point.
The Lady Mules shot 80
percent from the free throw line Friday night as the Tulia Hornets kept the
Lady Mules on the foul line.
D. Diaz fed Niblett the ball
on the blocks for the first two points of the game Friday against Tulia. She
added a pair of free throws before the quarter ended. D. Diaz and Y. Diaz each
scored a basket. Sa. Sudduth made two from the charity line and Perez chipped
in one. The Lady Mules had jumped out to an 11-1 lead after one quarter.
The Lady Mules turned up the
heat in the second period to out score the Hornets 19-5. Reagan Reynolds
cleaned up the back side for the first points of the second period. She added a
second hoop later in the quarter.
Sa. Sudduth drove and scored
and Esparza chipped in a free throw. Sy. Sudduth was four-for-four from the
free throw line in the second period. Perez scored from just inside the arc. D.
Diaz made a pair from the line after being fouled shooting and finished a fast
break on a pass from Sy. Sudduth. The Lady Mules led 30-7 at the half.
The Lady Mules did not score
for the first five minutes of the second half and Sa. Sudduth broke the slump
with a 12-foot jump shot. D. Diaz and Sy. Sudduth made almost back-to-back
treys to end the period with both teams scoring eight points. The Lady Mules
led 38-15.
Niblett scored in the paint
to start the final quarter. D. Diaz cashed in a pair of free throws and Perez
scored from the baseline. Sy. Sudduth made a pair of free throws and then
scored a basket. Esparza scored on an inbound play and finished a fast break
for a pair of hoops. Sa. Sudduth hit a trey early the final quarter.
Sy. Sudduth and D. Diaz led
the Lady Mules with 11 points each. Sa. Sudduth finished with nine points and
Niblett added eight points. Esparza and Perez dropped in five points each.
Reynolds scored four points and Y. Diaz chipped in two points.
The Lady Mules hosted the
Shallowater Fillies Tuesday night and then travel to Dimmitt to battle the
Bobbies Friday night.
