JV Lady Mules vs. Friona and Tulia (1-20&23-2015)

JV Lady Mules vs. Friona and Tulia (1-20&23-2015)

The JV Lady Mules had a big week and defeated both the Friona Squaws and Tulia Lady Hornets. Tuesday the Lady Mules traveled to Friona and jumped on the Squaws early. Full court pressure helped the Lady Mules to come home with a 36-12 win.

Friday the Lady Mules were not very gracious hosts as they swatted the Lady Hornets 49-13.

“It was two nice wins for us,” said Lady Mule coach Edie Niblett. “We still need to make our free throws and easy baskets. But I like having several players scoring. That tells me things are happening so everyone is involved.”

“We play tough defense and caused several turnovers. This team hustles none other that I have ever coached. They do not mind going to the floor for the ball.”

The Lady Mules took over the game against Friona in the second quarter. Friona scored six points in the first period but the Lady Mules held them to just six additional points in the game.

Marissa Reyes and Emily Precure set the scoring pace with nine points each. Desi Gutierrez finished with eight points and Jasmine Garza made six points. Hallie Hyatt dropped in three points. Gloria Gonzales, Brittany Mendoza and Karla Bustillos chipped in two points apiece.

The Lady Mules clamped on the full court pressure against the Lady Hornets and only allowed Tulia to see the front court occasionally. The Lady Mules opened a 13-5 lead in the first period and the Hornets did not score five points in the next two periods combined.

Garza set the Lady Mules in motion with a basket after stealing a pass from the Hornets. She added a second hoop later in the period. Precure, Gutierrez and Myatt found the range from behind the arc and dropped in a trey each. The Lady Mules led 13-5 after one period.

Myatt started the second frame by sinking her second 3-pointer. Precure also dropped in a second trey and Garza made a pair of free throws. Paolette Landeros scored in the paint to end the period with the Lady Mules leading 23-7 at the half.

Mendoza had the hot hand in the third period and opened the quarter with a basket. She added a second hoop and made three free throws. Garza, Precure, Gutierrez and Landeros chipped in a basket each. The Lady Mules out ran the Hornets 15-2 to lead 38-9 with eight minutes left to play.

Precure started the final quarter with a free throw and chipped in a second later in the quarter. Imelda Salcido drained a 3-pointer and Landeros put back an offensive rebound. Myatt made two free throws. Reyes and Marilyn Melendez dropped in a free throw each.

Precure led the Lady Mules with 10 points. Garza and Myatt finished with eight points each. Mendoza finished with seven points, Landeros scored six points and Gutierrez made five points. Salcido added three points and Melendez and Reyes chipped in one point each.

The Lady Mules started the second round of district by hosting the Shallowater Fillies Tuesday night and then travel to Dimmitt to play the Bobbies Friday.
