JV Mules vs. Littlefield (2-6-2015)

It took a few extra minutes but the JV Mules tied the game Tuesday night with the Littlefield Wildcats. It was the Mules first of two overtime games. Jesse Leal drove to the hoop and scored with just 34 seconds remaining in regulation to knot the score at 41-41.

The Mules out scored the Cats 11-8 in the extra period to take the game 52-49

Leal was fouled and made one of his two free throws to get the Mule offense rolling. Triston Boehning finished a fast break after Leal dealt him the ball. Javy Perez scored from near the elbow and Beto Diaz took a pass from Boo Flores and scored. The Mules led 7-3 after one period.

The Cats owned the middle two periods. Leal made a pair of baskets and Aaryn Ross chipped in a pair of free throws to end the second period with the Cats leading 17-14 at the half.

The Mules remained in their scoring slump during the third frame. Flores scored 20 seconds into the period and added a second hoop before it ended. Tim Perez picked off a Littlefield pass and drove the floor for a fast break bucket. Ross hit from just inside the arc to end the period with the Mules trailing 32-22.

The Mules blew the lid off the New Muleshoe High School Gymnasium in the final eight minutes to score 19 points. The Mule defense held Littlefield to just nine points.

Donavan Gutierrez hit a 10-foot jump shot 12 seconds into the final period. J. Perez took a pass from Leal and broke to the hoop for a lay up. Boehning scored from near the baseline and Diaz drove the lane for a hoop.

B. Flores hit from the elbow and later grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back up on the rim. Leal made a pair of free throws before making the hoop to tie the game.

Boehning scored in the paint to start the overtime period. He also made a free throw and a final bucket for five points in the extra period. Ross hit from just inside the arc and Leal added a pair from the charity line. J. Perez stuck back an offensive rebound to seal the deal for the Mules.

Leal set the scoring pace for the Mules with 12 points. J. Perez and Boehning finished with nine points each. Flores added eight points and Ross dropped in six points. Diaz had four points. T. Perez and Gutierrez chipped in two points each.

The Mules defeated Friona 52-49 in a second overtime game Friday night but no other information was available at press time.

The Mules traveled to Tulia Tuesday night and Shallowater Friday night. The Mules will close out their season at home February 17 when they host the Shallowater Mustangs.
