Lady Mules vs. Frenship JV Softball (3-4-14)
The Lady Mule softball team opened their home season Tuesday when they
hosted the Frenship Lady Tigers. Frenship proved to be to strong Tuesday for the
Lady Mules. The loss could have been due to a freak line shot to the right foot
of Marissa Cortez. The Tigers took the game 11-3.
Cortez had struck out two batters in the first inning and got the first
batter of the second inning to ground out to Amber Lopez at short. The second
batter streaked the pitch back at Cortez and caught her on the top of her
foot.
A. Lopez scrambled for the ball as it dribbled across the infield and fired
a strike to Gabi Chavez at first base for the out. Meanwhile Cortez laid in the
pitching circle in great pain.
She did finally get to her feet, walked around, then took a few warm up
pitches and resumed the game. But she never appeared as strong as when she had
started the game. In fact she did not record another strike out until the top of
the seventh inning.
Frenship scored first in the top of the fourth inning on a ground ball
single to left. Then a sacrifice bunt moved the runner to second. A run scored
on a single to left field to put the Tigers on top 1-0.
Sasha Esparza reached first on an error by the third baseman. Miranda
DeBruin laid a bunt down the third baseline for a single. Sam Vasquez walked to
load the bases. Chavez singled to left field to score Esparza and tie the
game.
An error on the pitcher allowed DeBruin to score from third and Reagan
Reynolds to reach first. Adriana Loya sent a line shot to third base that was to
hot to handle. Vasquez scored on the Loya’s single to put the Lady Mules on top
3-1.
The Lady Mules could never score after the fourth inning.
Frenship seemed to get stronger as the game went along. They added two runs
in the top of the fifth inning to tie the score and then sent 12 to the plate in
the top of the sixth inning to take a 10-3 advantage.
The Lady Mules were back in action Tuesday in Shallowater and then travel
to Lubbock Estacado on Friday. The Lady Mules kickoff the district season in
Abernathy March 15 at noon.
