JV Mules vs. Friona (2-11-14)
The JV Mules tried to battle their way back from a first period 17-9 hole
Tuesday evening in Friona against the Chiefs. The Mules made up ground in the
middle two periods to trail by a single point after three periods.
Friona put the Mules a way in the final quarter 55-50.
Tony Castillo scored the Mules first two points of the game and added a
3-pointer before the quarter ended. Bryce Mauricio and Triston Boehning made a
basket each. The Mules trailed 17-9 after one quarter.
The Mules trimmed three points off the Chiefs lead in the second quarter.
Beto Diaz got the Mules started early in the second period and added two more
baskets before the quarter ended.
Antonio Vasquez and Castillo made a basket each. Mario Flores made a pair
of charity tosses and Boehning added a free throw. The Mules had cut the Friona
lead to 27-22 by the intermission.
The Mules continued to chip away at the Friona lead in the third period and
out scored the Chiefs 16-12 to cut the lead to 39-38.
Vasquez got the Mules started with a hoop. Castillo made a basket and then
knocked down a 3-pointer. Kevin Mendoza drove the lane for a basket. JJ Gandara
stepped behind the arc and dropped in a 3-pointer to briefly give the Mules a
one-point lead. Friona ended the quarter with a basket to go in front.
The Mules seem to run out of gas in the final frame. Flores got the Mules
started in the final period with a hoop and added a free throw before the game
ended. Vasquez drained a 3-pointer from the wing.
Keagan Gonzales came alive in the final period with three baskets.
Castillo led the Mules with 12 points and Diaz added 10. Vasquez finished
with seven points and Gonzales made six. Flores dropped in five points, Gandara
and Boehning made three each. Mauricio and Mendoza chipped in two points
each.
Some of the JV Mules will join the varsity for the post season run while
the others will start the Spring sports.
