Lady Mules vs. Shallowater (12-11-2017)
Foul
problems for the eighth-grade Lady Mules presented the Shallowater Fillies a
gift. The Fillies defeated the Lady Mules 28-23.
The
Lady Mules tied the score at 2-2 in the opening period when Natalie Ambriz drove
the lane for a layup. She then put the Lady Mules in front by making a pair of
free throws. Kayla Soto drove the floor for a hoop to give the Lady Mules a 6-4
lead at the end of the first quarter.
The
Lady Mule full-court press held Shallowater to three points in the second frame.
Ambriz sank a jump shot from the right wing 37 seconds into the second quarter.
Kylee Villa passed to Soto for a layup to give the Lady Mules a 10-7 advantage
at the half.
Fouls
began to add up on the Lady Mules, and Shallowater took advantage in the third
period to outscore the Lady Mules 9-4. Alina Elizarraraz received a pass from
Paige Parker just inside the free-throw line for an eight-foot jumper. The Lady
Mules trailed 14-16 with one quarter left to play.
The
final quarter was a battle. Parker sank a trey from 20 feet to cut the Filly
lead to 17-19. Thirty-five seconds later Parker sank a short jumper. Ambriz tied
the game with 2:56 left to play in the game.
Ambriz
picked off a Filly pass and drove the floor. She stopped and popped from the
free throw line to tie the game at 21-21. The Lady Mules only scored once in the
final two and half minutes when Makayla Toscano put back an offensive rebound
just before the final buzzer sounded.
Ambriz
led the Lady Mules with eight points. Parker finished with seven points. Soto
dropped in four points. Elizarraraz and Toscano made two points each.
The
Lady Mules traveled to Roosevelt to play the Lady Eagles Monday evening to close
out the 2017 portion of the season. The Lady Mules will travel to Littlefield to
play the Lady Cats January 8 following the Christmas break. They will return
home to host the Idalou Lady Cats on January 15.
