Lady Mules vs. Friona (1-5-2018)
The Lady Mules trailed the Friona Squaws 19-16 at
the intermission Friday evening as both teams tried to remove the rust built up
over the holiday break. The Lady Mules came alive in the second half to
outscore the Squaws 29-11 for a 45-30 win.
“The thing I can always count on from this group is
that they will give their all,” said Lady Mule coach James Parker. “It is not
pretty sometimes, but they get after it. We are currently 3-2 in district and
are locked in a battle for the third and fourth spots. There are still a lot of
games to play.”
Keely Dunham broke the scoring ice with a
turn-around jump shot 40 seconds into the game. Alyssa Wheeler provided much of
the firepower in the first period with a free throw, a reverse
layup, and a 3-pointer from the corner for six points. Lilly Barrera sank a
15-foot jump shot.
The Lady Mules led Friona 10-8 after one period.
Friona broke the Lady Mule press and outscored the
Lady Mules 11-6 in the second period for a 19-16 lead at the intermission.
Brooke Garza made the Lady Mules only basket with a putback of an offensive rebound. She also made
two free throws. Yvonne Diaz dropped in a pair of free throws.
Garza opened the second half with a hoop and then
added a pair of free throws. L. Barrera made a reverse layup, and Kyndal Miller
dropped in a pair of free throws to tie the game at 26-26. Wheeler hit a short
jumper and chipped in a charity toss. Dunham scored a basket and dropped in a
pair of free throws.
The Lady Mules led 31-26 with eight minutes left in
the game.
The Lady Mules dominated the final frame with Miller
and Anahi Barrera making a basket each. Garza made three free throws in the
final period. Wheeler provided most of the firepower
with a trey and a pair of baskets.
Wheeler finished the night with 16 points. Garza had
nine points, and Dunham dropped in six points. L. Barrera and Miller added four
points each. A. Barrera, and Diaz chipped
in two points each.
The Lady Mules hosted the Shallowater Fillies
Tuesday evening and then will travel to Roosevelt to play the Lady Eagles
Friday night to wrap up the first round of di
