Freshmen Mules vs. Roosevelt
(12-18-2017)
The freshmen Mules proved to
be too much for the Roosevelt Eagles Monday evening. The Mules held the Eagles
scoreless until the 3:50 mark of the second quarter. The Mules downed the
Eagles 51-8.
Victor Velasquez got the
Mules started when he stole an Eagle inbound pass under the Mule basket and
scored 15 seconds into the game. Kurt Rodriguez put back an offensive rebound.
Braden Shipman picked an Eagles pocket and pushed the ball ahead to Cesar
Enriquez.
Enriquez was fouled while
making the layup, and he converted the free throw for a three-point play. The
Mule full-court press created a turnover when Enriquez made a steal and drove
the floor for a hoop.
Velazquez scored twice more
before the first period ended. Joe Gutierrez made three consecutive hoops.
Enriquez sank a trey and Shipman made a jumper from the blocks to end the first
period. The Mules led 24-0 after one quarter.
Shipman led off the second
period with a short jumper. He added a second hoop later in the half. Gutierrez
and Enriquez made a basket each. Velasquez scored and chipped in a free throw.
The Mules led 35-2 at the intermission.
The Roosevelt coach requested
a running clock in the second half.
The Mules continued to roll
up points. Shipman made a pass across the lane to Benji Ramirez for the Mules
final two points.
Enriquez led the Mules with
16 points. Velasquez dropped in 13 points. Gutierrez made all eight of his
points in the first half. Shipman finished with six points, and Rodriguez added
four points. Brett Martinez and Ramirez chipped in two points each.
