Lady Mules vs. Shallowater (12-11-2017)
The
freshmen Lady Mules took advantage of Shallowater Filly turnovers in the second
and third periods to defeat the Fillies 33-20 Monday evening.
Danielle
Moran drove from the right wing to tie the game at 2-2 in the opening period.
Kaitlyn Kelley sank a turn-around jumper from the blocks to keep the game tied
at 4-4. Jordan Zapata sank a charity toss and a minute later drove down the lane
to put the Lady Mules on top 7-5. Kelley sank a 12-foot jump shot with a minute
left for a 9-7 Lady Mule lead after one quarter.
Kelley
was fouled attempting to put back an offensive rebound and made both free throws
for an 11-7 Lady Mule lead early in the second period. Moran took a pass from
Destiny Florez for a layup. A minute later she drove the paint to give the Lady
Mules a 15-10 advantage. She then chipped in a free throw as did Zapata to end
the half with the Lady Mules leading 17-10.
Heather
Chavez was on the receiving end of a Zapata pass for an easy basket to start the
third quarter. Moran went coast-to-coast for a layup and then sank a 3-pointer
from the top of the key. The Lady Mules kept up the defensive pressure.
Zapata
drove the court for a layup to put the Lady Mules in front 26-14 after
three-quarters of play.
The
Lady Mules backed off the full-court pressure in the final quarter. Moran scored
to open the final period with an assist from Grace Leal. Chavez dropped in a
short jumper with just over three minutes left in the game.
Moran
made the Lady Mule final hoop with a drive from the left wing.
Moran
set the scoring pace for the Lady Mules with 16 points. Kelley added seven
points, and Zapata dropped in six points. Chavez finished with four points.
The
Lady Mules have completed their 2017 portion of the season as Lubbock Roosevelt
does not have a freshman team. The Lady Mules will travel to Littlefield play
the Lady Cats January 8, 2018. The Lady Mules will host Caprock January 18.
