9th Lady Mules vs.
Slaton (11-27-2017)
There was only five freshman
Lady Mules able to take the court Monday evening to play the Slaton Tigerettes.
Slaton had a full slate of players. The Lady Mules fell behind 7-0 in the first
period before the Lady Mules ever scored. Slaton went on to lead the Lady Mules
15-5 at the end of the opening period.
The Lady Mules battle back
over the next three quarters to cut the Slaton lead to 30-29 with ten seconds
left in the fourth quarter. The Lady Mules were forced to foul, and Slaton
missed the front end of the one-and-one situation.
The Lady Mules grabbed the
rebound, drove the floor, and put up a shot from 20 feet that would not fall.
Slaton slipped out of Muleshoe with a 30-29 win.
Destiny Florez scored the
Lady Mules first hoop of the game. Dani Moran sank a basket, and Jordan Zapata
chipped in a free throw. Slaton led 15-5 after one quarter.
The Lady Mules turned up the
heat with full-court pressure to hold Slaton to three points in the second
frame. Heather Chavez started the Lady Mule scoring run with a free throw, and
she added three baskets before the first half ended. Zapata and Moran dropped
in a bucket each. The Lady Mules had cut the Slaton lead to 18-16 by the half.
Zapata made a layup to tie
the game at 18-18 to start the third period. Chavez again tied the game at
20-20, and Florez added a hoop. Slaton increased their lead to 27-22 with one
quarter left to play.
Fatigue may have affected the
Lady Mule shooting in the final period, but they continued the relentless
full-court press. Moran made back-to-back baskets, and Zapata dropped in a
hoop. Kaitlyn Kelley chipped in a free throw.
Chavez paced the Lady Mules
with nine points. Moran finished with eight points, and Zapata had seven
points. Kelley chipped in one free throw.
