Lady Mules vs. Dimmitt & Slaton (1-23&26-2018)
The injury-ridden and
bug-bitten Lady Mules got off to a quick start to the week with a 58-20 win
over the Dimmitt Bobbies. Only six of the Lady Mules were in uniform when the
Lady Mules hosted Dimmitt.
The Slaton Tigerettes were
prepared for the visiting Lady Mules jumped in front early. The Lady Mules
battled back and took a two-point lead by the end of the first half. Slaton
came on strong in the second half to defeat the Lady Mules 52-40.
The Lady Mules utilized
full-court pressure to create Dimmitt turnovers that were soon converted to
points. Keely Dunham was fouled while shooting in the first 15 seconds of the
game.
Dunham made one free throw to
get the Lady Mules started. Brooke Garza scored twice near the blocks on feeds
from Anahi Barrera. She finished the quarter with a third basket. Lilly Barrera
made back-to-back driving layups, and Kyndal Miller put back an offensive
rebound. The Lady Mules led Dimmitt 13-6 after the first period.
It was more of the same in
the second period as the Lady Mules continued to apply pressure and force
Dimmitt turnovers.
Garza banked in a short
jumper to start the second frame. Dunham scored in the paint, and Cassidy Cage
made a pair of free throws. Miller drained a short jumper from near the elbow.
A. Barrera made a steal and drove the floor for a layup. She chipped in a free
throw and sank a shot that beat the buzzer. The Lady Mules led 28-11 at the
half.
The Lady Mule defense held
Dimmitt to two free throws in the third quarter. L. Barrera sent a bounce pass
to Dunham posting up for a turnaround jumper. Cage got the assist on Dunham’s
basket. Dunham chipped in a free throw and added another basket before the
quarter ended.
Cage hit a 15-foot jumper.
Garza scored in the paint, and A. Barrera chipped in a free throw. L. Barrera
completed a three-point play by converting the free throw following a hoop. The
Lady Mules led Dimmitt 43-13 with one quarter left to play.
Garza made back-to-back hoops
to open the final period. Miller put back an offensive rebound. Cage, L.
Barrera, and A. Barrera made a hoop each. Dunham chipped in a free throw and
finished the game with an eight-foot bank shot.
All six of the Lady Mules
that were in uniform scored during the game. Garza led the Lady Mules with 14
points. Dunham was right behind with 13 points. L. Barrera was in double digits
with 11 points. A. Barrera dropped in eight points. Miller and Cage finished
with six points each.
The Lady Mules got off to a
slow start in the opening period at Slaton with only seven points. Yvonne Diaz
made a free throw three minutes into the opening quarter. Brianna Barron drove
for a layup and Dunham bank a short jumper off the glass. Cage finished a fast
break. The Lady Mules trailed Slaton 14-7 after one frame.
The Lady Mules hit their
stride in the second period. L. Barrera sank a trey from the wing and later
picked a Tigerettes pocket and drove to the hoop. Cage put back a rebound, and
Miller made a pair of free throws along with a short jumper.
A. Barrera picked off a pass
and drove to the hoop. She later chipped in a free throw. Dunham was fouled as
she sank a short jumper that tied the game at 21-21. She converted the free
throw to put the Lady Mules in front. The Lady Mules led 24-22 at the
intermission.
Dunham made a short jumper
three minutes into the second half. She later scored on an inbound play. Miller
chipped in a free throw. The Lady Mules trailed 32-29 with one quarter left to
play.
Miller opened the final the
final period with a layup. Cage dropped in a short jumper, and Barron drove the
lane for a hoop. A. Barrera chipped in three free throws, and Diaz added two
more from the charity line.
Dunham led the Lady Mules
with nine points. Miller finished with seven points. Cage and A. Barrera added
six points each. L. Barrera made five points, and Barron finished with four
points. Diaz chipped in three points.
The Lady Mules hosted Friona
Tuesday evening and will travel to Shallowater to play the Fillies Friday
night.
