9th Mules vs. Friona (12-4-2017)
The freshmen Mules scored early and often Monday to
jump in front of the Friona Braves 12-4 after one quarter. The Mules continued
to hold the Braves to single digits for the next three periods. The Mules
defeated Friona 38-18.
Joe Gutierrez stuck back an offensive rebound to put
the Mules in front to stay early in the opening period. The Mules full-court
press caused the Braves to give up the ball, and
Gutierrez dropped the ball in the hoop.
Kurt Rodriguez sank an 18-foot jumper on an inbound
play and seconds later put back an offensive rebound for a basket. Victor Velasquez
drove the paint for a hoop before Gutierrez drove the left side for a layup.
The Mules led 12-4 after one frame.
Cesar Enriquez dropped in a 3-pointer from the left
wing. He added two more hoops before the half ended to extend the Mule lead to
19-9 at the intermission.
Enriquez drained his second trey of the game to open the third period. He scored on an inbound
play from the left wing. Braden Shipman was fouled while shooting and made one
charity toss. Gutierrez picked a Brave’s pocket at midcourt and drove for a
layup.
Velasquez stuck back a rebound for a hoop just
before Enriquez drove the lane for a basket. Matthew Fabela fed Velasquez on
the blocks for a hoop. Shipman scored the final basket of the game with a
jumper from the blocks.
Enriquez hit a pair of treys and led the Mules with
15 points. Gutierrez and Velasquez added eight points each. Rodriguez made all
four of his points in the first quarter. Shipman finished with three points.
The Mules traveled to Shallowater to play the
Mustangs Monday evening. The Mules will host the Portales Rams December 15 and
host the Roosevelt Eagles December 18 before taking the Christmas break.
